Robert Vandereycken

Studies aan de Stedelijke Academie voor Schone kunsten te Hasselt.

Later werd hij hier leraar schilder-en tekenkunst en in 1976 aangesteld als directeur.

Hij verliet de Academie in 1988.

Was leerling aan het Hoger Instituut voor “Toegepaste Kunsten” te Luik, aan de “Hogere School voor Architektuur en Sierkunsten Ter Kameren” (onder leiding van Paul Delvaux) en aan het “Provenciaal Normaalinstituut voor Tekenkunst” te Brussel.

Werkt in 1972 op het atelier van de Italiaanse beeldhouwer “Mascherini” te Salsburg en ontving de Ereprijs van deze stad, werkte nadien eveneens op het atelier van Kirchner te Munchen (D).

Was tijdens de periode 1955-1964 leraar siertekenen aan het EPIAT te Brussel.

Met een studiebeurs reisde hij in 1964 naar de U.S.A. en ondernam later o.a. studiereizen naar: U.S.S.R., Spanje, Frankrijk, Engeland, Denemarken, Finland, Nederland, Duitsland, Oostenrijk, U.S.A., China, Tibet, Japan, Afrika.

Met P. Cox stichtte hij in 1961 de kunstgroep “HELIKON”.

Werkte op de wereldtentoonstelling in 1958 aan verschillende opdrachten en in 1973 op uitnodiging van het Franse Ministerie van Cultuur in het “Centre Artistique de rencontres internationales” te Nice (Fr).

Sinds 1953 verschillende tentoonstellingen in binnen- en buitenland met o.a. Museum “Le Bastion te Antibes” (Fr.).

In België o.a.: retrospectieve tentoonstelling in het Cultureel Centrum en Bank Brussel Lambert (Hasselt), in de Galerij Devuyst (Lokeren) en verder Antwerpen, Luik, Luxemburg, Tielt, Gent enz…

Tentoonstelling te Itami (Osaka, Japan).

Sinds 1988 tentoonstellingen in Spanje o.a. Museum Camon Aznar te Zaragoza, Museum van Goya te Fuendetodos(geboortedorp van Goya, waar de “Goya Suite” van Robert Vandereycken werd tentoongesteld in het kader van 250 jaar Goya), Museum “Castillo de Larrés” (Museum voor tekenkunst), museum van Logronjo, Fraga, Alcaniz, en cultureel centrum van Calonge en Castell D’Aro.

Verder groepstentoonstellingen o.a. doorheen 18 Spaanse Steden.

Monumentale beelden werden geplaatst te Itami (Japan), Foshan (China), Fraga (Spanje), Barbastro (Spanje), Alcaniz (Spanje), Colliour (Fr), Sint-Niklaas en Hasselt (België).

Robert Vandereycken werd in 1996 benoemd als lid van de “Koninklijke Academie voor Wetenschappen en Schone Kunten van België”.

In oktober 2004 werd een permanente expo geopend in de Herckenrodehoeve in Opheers. Volgens de kunstenaar is hij niet meer van plan om nog ergens anders in België te exposeren. Nu is hij actief in Spanje, waar hij een eigen atelier heeft en ook veel tijd doorbrengt.

In 2006 januari, werd in Spanje een litho voorgesteld aan pers en T.V. in opdracht en aanwezigheid van de zanger Carreras. Deze litho samen met een tekst van Carreras werd verkocht ten bate van het Kankerfonds opgericht door Carreras.

BIOGRAPHY OF ROBERT VANDEREYCKEN.

At the age of 15, he studied at the Higher Institute of Architecture and Applied Arts in Liège, Belgium. Later he worked for a local newspaper to pay for his studies in the Brussels School of Art, much to the chagrin of his parents. He was drafted into the army at the age of 18 years for over a year. He studied at the Provincial Normal Institute in Brussels and at the Ter Kameren University of Art with Paul Delvaux as his teacher. He was a teacher from 1955 until 1963 at the Epiat (Brussels). Later he taught at the Stedelijke Academie voor Schone kunsten in Hasselt from 1963 until 1975, when he became the director until 1988.

In 1988 he left the Academy to pursue his work at his studio in Hasselt and his studio in Spain. He is a great music lover and a co-founder of the music ensemble, “Helikon Quartet”. He is an avid traveller and has been awarded scholarships to travel to Russia, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Austria, France, Spain, Japan, China, Tibet, Portugal and the United States.

Robert Vandereycken had his first exhibition when he was twenty years old. He met Herman Teirlinck and illustrated his novel Gevecht met de Engel (Fight with the Angel).

He is a member of the jury for the Grand Prize of Rome and member of the Royal Academy for Literature, Science and Fine Arts of Belgium. He collaborated in the television film “Rachel” and has collaborated with Marcello Mascharini in Salzburg, with the Malraux foundation in France, with the Kirchner studio in Munich and at the Sculpture Biennial in Padua.

“Vandereycken is a modern classic. His theme is classic: Man, like the great ancient Greek and Roman sculptors: He places Man central in his work. Not so much chat Man does, but who he is. Vandereycken plunges his figures into a bath that is scented with human dignity and solidarity.

Vandereycken is a humanist. He believes in Man. With limited means he lets him do great things.

“However, Vandereycken is also a radically modern classic. He has absorbed the twentieth century. He stylizes his human figures with simple pen strokes, rejects the scientific perspective, learns from Picasso’s early blue period, weaves influences from the oriental art of painting into his works, as has become apparent from his almost calligraphic drawings on paper: he sketches his figures’ faces with the simplicity of Hellenic portraits. In his sculptures he makes light and shadow dance over the bronze, topples and turns the material until it comes quietly and meditatively to life. He also loves the peaceful weapons of the artist: the paper or canvas that becomes the bearer of graphic elements, just as in his bronzes the suppleness of the lost wax technique comes to the surface. What could be shrieking is tempered, as has become apparent form the modest use of colour in his work.
